Challenging David Cameron to talk about UK renegotiation in the European Parliament

I have challenged David Cameron to speak in the European Parliament.

 

Text of my speech as follows:

 

“It’s wonderful that Heads of Government and Heads of State come here to set out their agenda, and dialogue is never a bad thing. However, I think there is one notable exception, or one person who hasn’t come here who has a lot to say about Europe and that’s the UK’s Prime Minister, David Cameron – The Prime Minister who reckons he can renegotiate, for example, the social chapter.

 

Isn’t it about time that he came to this chamber and explain what he really meant, so that we the elected people across Europe could actually see if the UK could renegotiate their terms of membership?”

 

It is common place for Government leaders or Heads of State to address the EP. In February, France’s Francois Hollande addressed the Parliament about the future of the European Union. This week, Prime Minister of Slovenia Borut Pahor has addressed the Parliament on the future of the European Union and Slovenia’s position within the 27-member EU.

 

 

Making noise for road safety

The European Parliament will vote tomorrow on an amendment to make the generation of artificial engine noise mandatory on electric and hybrid cars. The US government has already announced such a move.

This is an emminently sensible idea, as the dangers of silent cars are patently obvious. It is not just those who are visually impaired who would be at risk, but chldren, and indeed all of us.

Although I am instinctively opposed to EU legislation, believing as I do that most matters are better handled at member state level, I shall be supporting this amendment as I believe it will make a major difference to road safety.

Common Fisheries Policy 6th February 2013

The practice of trawlers discarding dead fish has been a major factor in the degredation of our fishing grounds.

Indeed, the Common Fisheries Policy is generally regarded as being something of a failure at every level. British fishermen have been particularly badly hit.

Tomorrow the European Parliament will vote to eliminate discards. I will support this, although I will follow the official line of the British government, and will not support any amendments that seek merely to reduce discards. This practice must be eliminated completely.

A YouGov Poll released today by the newly formed We Demand A Referendum Party shows the majority of electorate DO NOT have trust in David Cameron to stand up for British interests in the European Union.

The poll reveals that 54% do not have trust compared to 38% that do.

The same YouGov poll also reveals that the gap between those who wish to see an EU Referendum (62%) widening over those who do not (24%). In a YouGov Poll last month the figures for the same question were 56% to 28% respectively.

Worryingly for David Cameron the poll shows that almost three out of four Conservative voters want a Referendum.

The single issue We Demand A Referendum Party held their inaugural conference in London on Friday issued an ultimatum to the Prime Minister that if he failed to facilitate a In/Out Referendum by 1^st January 2014 they would stand in every region in the next European Elections under the banner ‘We Demand A Referendum’ A YouGov Poll last month showed between 16% and 33% of the electorate would vote for them in June 2014 earning them between 8 and 22 seats.

Party Chairman, Nikki Sinclaire MEP said “These results show there is increasing support from across the political spectrum for an EU Referendum – When will the politicians listen to the people?”

The West Midlands MEP added “The economic crisis has changed the ball game in Europe. Fundamental changes are underway, now is the time to decide once and for all which fork in the road to take.”

Press Release: Campaign for a Referendum goes to Cannock

NIKKI SINCLAIRE GIVES CANNOCK THE CHANCE TO “HAVE THEIR SAY” ABOUT EU

Independent West Midlands MEP Nikki Sinclaire will be sending her Have Your Say Battle Bus to Cannock on FRIDAY 3^RD AUGUST from 10am – 3pm. Nikki’s highly successful campaign has been featured across the national press as she delivered 120,000 signatures to Downing Street and secured a debate in Parliament on 24^th October 2011. The Campaign for a Referendum on our continued membership of the European Union is carrying on collecting signatures across the region, as well as giving out information and advice about MEP’s and European Matters.

Nikki wants a referendum so everybody has a chance to register their say on whether we should be a part of the European Union, and the West Midlands has contributed over half of the 120,000 signature total. Nikki is bringing her new petition forms along to the event, so the members of the public have their chance to have their names added to the new petition form. The new petition form aims to become a bill in Parliament.

Anyone under the age of 54 has never had the chance to speak about this issue, which Nikki believes is a breach of our democratic principles. The last time the UK held a referendum on the Common Market, as it was known then, was in 1975 – and even this was retrospective. Despite the fact that this campaign could leave Ms Sinclaire without a job, Nikki is passionate that people be given a voice in deciding whether it is right that:

·        The UK contributes £48 million per day to the EU

·        75% of UK laws are decided by the EU yet the UK only has 72 MEPs in the Parliament out of a total of 736 MEPs

·        Each day we buy £5 million more from EU countries than they buy from us.

Commenting on her “Have Your Say” campaign, Nikki Sinclaire said, “European Law is rarely conducive or indeed relevant to British industry or infrastructure. The EU takes almost £50 million a day of our money for the privilege of belonging - money better spent in this country, where we need it most - on our hospitals, on our schools and in supporting our pensioners. When will the political elite realise that Britain cannot afford to remain in this Parliament?”

Like many towns and cities across the UK, Cannock faces mounting cuts to public services. Nikki finds it a disgrace that even as the British public tightens its belt, the EU approves budget hikes and other measures which will impact on the British pocket.

Nikki’s team of advisers will be with her mobile surgery in Cannocks Market Place from 10am – 3pm to collect signatures for the campaign, hand out literature and to give out information and advice about Nikki and the European Union.
