You may recall I have spoken about ACTA on my blog in the
past, and over the past few weeks I’ve been asked whether there has been any
progress on this issue.
The main update I can give you is that on the 31st
May, the European Parliament opposed the treaty. Three of its influential
committees called for the rejection of the treaty.
These three committees consisted of the Legal Affairs
Committee (JURI), the Committee for Industry Research and Energy (ITRE) and the
Committee for Civil liberties, justice and Home Affairss (LIBE). All three of
these committees voted against implementing the agreement, which has caused
mass protest in several European Countries this year.
This cold shower for the trade agreement does not seal its
fate, with the next vote on it by the Committee on International Trade (INTA)
of the European Parliament will take place on June 21st. It will be
the fourth and final opinion the committees are to submit before ACTA is taken
to plenary in early July.
I will continue to oppose this treaty and keep all my
constituents informed.
