The effects of austerity on disabled people: a speech in Strasbourg

Draconian Austerity is detrimental to disabled people in terms of consistent human rights violations. Disabled people (8% of UK population) are finding themselves in a worst position of poverty than ever before.

In the UK we have seen the horror and the constant reassessments of the work capability assessment which has led to the deaths and suicides of 73 disabled people a week.

It is also abhorrent that 29% of the cuts are focussed on disabled people.

We have seen fewer and fewer people entitled to support from their local authorities, and we will see the introduction of personal independence payments to replace disability living allowance and, set to knock over half a million people off support.

There is also a proposal to close the Independent living fund permanently after closing it to new applicants. The proposal by the government is to transfer monies to cash strapped local authorities. Some local authorities are already saying that they will institutionalize disabled people, as this is the cheaper option.

These are just some of the cuts impacting on disabled people in the UK estimated to take 9 billion from the pockets of the poorest in society.

No wonder The British people are sick and tired of the EU, we have a saying Charity begins at home.

Mr President We in Britain need to look after our vulnerable people first and not be hampered by sending £53 Million every day to the EU.
