On 13th July 2013 Croatia will become the 28th member of the EU. This is despite economic indicators - public debt, unemployment etc, - that suggest that the country is not ready for accession. Corruption and organised crime are also rampant.
In 2007, the EU pushed ahead with the accession of Bulgaria and Romania, despite similar problems, and those nations have yet to fulfil their accession obligations (this was partly due to the Conservative MEP Geoffrey Van Orden who advocated premature accession), and human rights problems and people trafficking remain major problems.
Croatia also has unresolved border disputes, a fact that should bar its way to EU membership, and the country's environmental standards have been described as 'totally incompatible' with those of more developed EU states.
And remember - accession now means an obligation to join the Euro. Given the state of the single currency, would that be a wise move even for a small and immature economy like Croatia's?
