Letter from Hugh Robertson MP regarding Football Club ownership

Dear Nikki,

Thank you for your recent letter, following contact from a number of your constituents, who are concerned about football club ownership.

I am pleased with the responses I have received from members of the House, the

media, and the wider public at large about the Government’s response to the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee football governance inquiry. We have set out a number of key challenges for the football authorities, including around increasing supporter representation and ownership at football clubs. In our response to the Select Committee report into football governance, we recommended significant reform of the FA’s Board and

Council; the introduction of a club licensing system where financial sustainability and

robust checks on club owners and directors are included, and for greater supporter

representation at football clubs. I can assure you that the Secretary of State and I

are committed to seeing this through.

Together, we continue to meet with the football authorities to hear what progress

they are making. It is our belief that it is for the football authorities to determine the

best way of achieving the right changes, but Government will be a key partner in

those discussions. The football authorities have recently submitted their proposals to

make these improvements and the Government will be responding in due course.

The Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee will also review progress, after which

the Government will decide on a way forward.

Thank you, again, for writing, with all my very best wishes.

                                                                                        HUGH ROBERTSON MP

Minister for Sport and the Olympics

I shall be replying to this letter shortly and I will post my letter online.

Letter in the Coventry Telegraph: Sky Blues' fans need to pull together

I had this letter printed in the Coventry Telegraph today. My letters to the MPs have been featured on this blog.

As soon as we have replies I will post them online.

After writing to both Councillor Mutton and SISU s Tim Fisher just a few months ago to facilitate a meeting between us all about Coventry City's future, I received a reply from Councillor Mutton who declined my request for a meeting and I have heard nothing back from SISU or Tim Fisher.

This week I have written to the Department of Media, Sport and Culture and have copied this letter to the FA to ask why the Government is not doing more on the subject of football ownership. While I wouldn't t support the government getting involved in on´-the-field matters, I would welcome a stronger approach to the vetting of potential owners. The copy of my letter, and previous letters about Coventry City Football Club, can be found on my blog.

What is now important is for Coventry City fans to pull together, no matter what their opinions are. I receive many emails concerning Coventry City football club, and I would urge all fans not to believe what is written on the internet, and where possible, not to take sides as such. This is a highly complex issue, and all everybody wants is for Coventry City to move towards a more positive future.

Coventry City is a fantastic club and they have passionate, loyal support. It would be fantastic if the club saw high attendances throughout the League One campaign this year - there is no doubt that high attendances for Sheffield Wednesday helped their promotion push.

I will continue to welcome fans comments and emails, and I want to help in any way I can. Football is incredibly vital to the West Midlands region, and we need to secure Coventry City Football Clubs future for the good of the region and the fans.

Coventry City FC

I spent Saturday at Coventry City FC. As part of my sponsorship package for David Bell I was given the use of a box for the day, and I took the opportunity to invite some of my friends from the Meriden RAID  camp and Anti-HS2 campaigners.

Some of you may or may not know that the Football League are working alongside the Help the Hospices charity, and all the 72 league clubs are working with their local hospices to raise money.

Mary Ann Evans Hospice and Myton Hospice are two of the chosen hospices that Coventry City are helping. Teams from those hospices were outside of the Ricoh arena on Saturday to collect money, and I dropped money into the buckets and had a quick picture with their furry mascots. I am always keen to support vital services such as these.

The match ended with a 1-1 scoreline, despite the fact the Blues and Coventry fans with me believed there would be a definate winner on the day. To the right is the picture of myself and my guests pitchside at the Ricoh arena. The Ricoh arena will be known as the City of Coventry Stadium this summer as Olympic football comes to the Midlands.
