MEP launches travellers policy paper

West Midlands MEP Nikki Sinclaire has today launched a new policy paper 'Equality In Planning: A Fresh Look At Unlawful Development & A New Deal For Travellers, Settled Communities & The Environment'.

On 30 April 2010, Miss Sinclaire witnessed at first hand the unlawful development by travellers of green belt land on the outskirts of Meriden. She has subsequently spent a great deal of her time and resources supporting the villagers of Meriden in their opposition to the development, and has given evidence on their behalf on more than one occasion. In 2011 she accompanied a group of residents to the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg.

However, the experience has taught her about the inequaties of the law, and she has become aware of how the current system is failing both the travellers and the settled community.

"The present system is a mess", says Miss Sinclaire. "At the moment, everybody is a loser. We need to adequately address the needs of the travellers, the settled community, and the environment."

The booklet examines a number of issues, and offers policy suggestions in no less than 17 areas.
