Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar/Burma militant and parliamentary opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will receive the Sakharov Prize, awarded to her in 1990, and address the House in a ceremony starting on Tuesday. Ms Suu Kyi was released from house arrest three years ago.

The European Parliament awarded the Sakharov Prize to Aung San Suu Kyi in 1990 in recognition of her fight for democracy and the rule of law in Burma, while she was under house arrest.

Many of you will know the following famous quote, taken from a speech that Aung San Suu Kyi gave;

It is not power that corrupts, but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.

She is an inspiration to all those who are fighting for democracy and I feel honoured that she will address us today.
